NDIS Accessible Home Builder Project: Perfectly Modified for Lifelong Living
NDIS Accessible Home Builder projects are about more than construction, they’re about dignity, comfort, and future-proof design. Our recently completed McGregor project is a perfect example of how a thoughtfully modified home can support clients through every stage of life while still delivering style, space, and functionality.
This home was adapted from our popular Emerald display plan and carefully redesigned to suit the client’s accessibility, mobility, and long-term lifestyle requirements.
The result is a home that feels beautiful, open, and welcoming, while meeting strict accessibility and compliance standards.
A Customised Emerald Plan With Accessibility Front of Mind
The original Emerald design is already known for its generous layout and three separate living areas, giving families room to spread out and enjoy privacy when needed.
However, this project required more than space alone.
As an experienced NDIS Accessible Home Builder, we worked through a detailed discovery and design process with the client to understand both present and future needs. Every change was intentional, practical, and compliant — without sacrificing visual appeal.
Our team collaborated closely with the client to ensure all modifications met NDIS expectations and National Construction Code requirements at completion.
Key Accessibility Modifications That Made the Difference
Accessibility is achieved through dozens of smart design decisions, not just one or two features. This project included multiple structural and layout improvements to ensure smooth movement and safer daily living.
Major upgrades included:
• All internal doorways widened to a minimum of 920mm or 1020mm
• Main entrance door expanded to 1200mm with a level entry threshold
• Hallways widened throughout the home for wheelchair circulation
• A curved feature wall added in the entry and main lounge to improve flow and manoeuvrability
• Kitchen island designed with a 300mm overhang on three sides
• Increased clearance between island and rear benchtop for mobility access
These changes ensured the home remained easy to navigate without feeling clinical or institutional.
That balance is something every skilled NDIS Accessible Home Builder must achieve.
Safer Surfaces and Smarter Materials
Mobility safety extends beyond layout, flooring and surfaces matter too.
All originally specified smooth concrete areas were upgraded to exposed aggregate. This provides greater grip and slip resistance while also enhancing the exterior finish visually.
It’s a practical improvement that also adds texture and character to the build.
Accessibility features should never feel like an afterthought, they should feel integrated into the design.
Bathroom and Bedroom Accessibility Enhancements
Private spaces must also be carefully designed for comfort and independence.
The master suite in this project includes:
• Accessible semi-recessed basin in the vanity
• Large walk-in shower
• Fold-down shower seat
• Handheld shower rose
• Installed grab rails where required
• Extra noggins added behind walls for future grab rail installation
• Upgraded ambulant toilet with increased height
These features allow for both immediate usability and future adaptability, a core principle followed by every professional NDIS Accessible Home Builder.
Why Accessible Housing Matters More Than Ever
Accessible home design is not a niche requirement, it is increasingly becoming a mainstream necessity.
According to the Liveable Housing Guidelines (Fourth Edition):
• One in five Australians (nearly 4 million people) live with some form of disability
• Around 320,000 are children
• There is a 60% chance a home will be occupied by a person with a disability at some stage of its life
This means accessible design benefits not only current occupants, but future residents, visitors, and family members as well.
Homes built with accessibility in mind are more flexible, more valuable, and more future-ready.
Beyond Compliance: Building for Comfort and Efficiency
While accessibility was central to this project, it wasn’t the only priority.
At Diverse Builders, we ensure every project also meets (and often exceeds) National Construction Code energy efficiency standards. Through careful planning discussions, we help clients achieve:
• Better year-round comfort
• Lower energy costs
• Strong structural performance
• Long-term durability
A qualified NDIS Accessible Home Builder must deliver both compliance and quality, never one at the expense of the other.
Client Experience Matters
A successful build is measured not just by the final result, but by the journey.
“We had an excellent experience overall. We felt comfortable and confident in Diverse Builders. Felt great to support a local business as well.”
~ Patrick & Julie
Clear communication, collaborative planning, and transparency are essential in specialised builds like this.
